NYC refracting light beacon:
A pedestrian wayfinding system requires visibility and clarity to the public and its users. Due to the budget and infrastructural constraints there could be no electrical power to each signage unit i.e no backlighting. Thinking about light led me to look at alternative ways of creating it without power. The acrylic ‘beacons’ were developed to collect natural daylight and capture car headlight beams (if only for an instant) at night – the beacon effectively acting as an identifier in the street and sidewalks.
