Europe

My focus has always been the interaction of the human-made at various scales and its relationship in how we live, work and coalesce.

I have a somewhat varied career within the realms of Product/Industrial design. My first position was as Product designer for a fashion brand in London, UK. With my professional design experience I have found myself in situations to speculate, theorise, design, develop, systemise, strategise and deliver products for a range of clients in a wide range of industries across the world. I have learnt to combine my diverse experience and knowledge of materials and deep respect for craft. I apply this to influence the client / stakeholders across a number of areas such as Architectural Building products, Transportation, Civic agencies, Lighting and Controls and Healthcare.

I am often the face between engineer, product manager, marketing, and product manufacturing to help progress each project through an understanding of manufacturing, commercial and technical parameters.
Always in mind is a human-centered focus, whether it be the strategies and tactics developed for products, services or the Public Realm.

My work has covered everything from tabletop accessories to urban furniture elements blurring the lines between product, architectural and urban scales. I have been involved in strategising product portfolios for OEM companies (Original Equipment Manufacturer) aimed towards their growth targets and assisting companies to commercialise their technology through unique and innovative applications. These have been through workshop environments where service design was also part of the design process.

In recent years I have worked on large scale architectural projects (within an architectural project framework with multiple stakeholders) and involved with all aspects of spatial production. From feasibility to designing successful products (for building interiors, infrastructure and exterior areas). I have also been involved in developing strategies for placemaking, transit, Cities and their Public infrastructure (wayfinding) and Urban realms. All this has been achieved in both full-time positions and as freelance.

I now live and work in Europe, after most of my career based in London and some years in the United States. I also have a sound design practise creating sound / audio for online films and idents.

Outside of the day-to-day I always try to keep the fires alive with personal projects. I have a keen interest in capturing sound from various places and spaces as well as all things visual. See my blog on this site for more: http://misterblack.co.uk/blog
